Although I loved being a DJ, I wanted to go beyond the playing and really understand how music worked. When I turned 18, I had the opportunity to move to Madrid and study Sound Engineering and Production. Although very insightful, it still wasn’t enough — I was hungry for knowledge and wanted to understand how a DJ could connect with an audience, so I delved into the world of Musicology to understand how music affects and influences our brain.
Logic has a ton of great built-in MIDI sounds. Your first option is to select the sound of the keyboard you’d like to record. In the top left corner, there’s a box with a file folder inside. Click on that to open the menu. From there you can turn your MIDI sound into almost anything by searching through the available sounds: everything from synths to classic, electric, and grand pianos, and percussion sounds.

Favorite lyric: “And I’d tell you I love you but I wouldn’t let you know it / cause that’s when it gets too hard not to blow it” —“Not That Kind of a Poet”
The body art style is itself distinctive, and helps to convey the melancholic yet hopeful vibe of the song. This reflects on Gotye’s authentic lyricism as he is stripped away of his clothes, but it also makes a slightly less playful reference to the style of Peter Gabriel’s video for “Sledgehammer.”
Frances Katz began her career writing about MTV and Napster. Now she writes about technology, music, business, and culture for a variety of publications including The Week, The Atlantic, Paste, The New York Times, Ploughshares, and others. She lives in Atlanta, but you can keep up with her on Twitter.
The Space Echo is a tape delay pedal with a spring reverb plate built into it. Roland had made other tape delay machines before the RE-201, but adding the reverb plate colored the sound in a unique way. The way it combined both effects was fairly unique at the time, and artistically done, but now that’s fairly common across different guitar pedals, plugins, and outboard delay boxes.
Grants for musicians
Bandsintown offers a set of high-powered tools aimed at helping musicians promote shows, engage fans, and upload videos. Their events widget is designed to sync up show listing information across the web, so adding it to your site will help your fans stay up to date with accurate information about your performances. Show announcements can be automated and sent out through their platform, which is also a big plus. But Bandsintown’s biggest advantage comes with their comprehensive show listing page, which shows fans which artists are playing shows near them, in case you wanted to pitch your band for a support spot!

“We’re gonna need more crayons. There is not necessarily a lot of competition for the title of ‘Greatest unauthorized Kanye West coloring book of all time,’ but newly announced Color Me Kanye would earn it even if there was.”

Sorry if you weren’t there, but the late ’90s and early 2000s were fantastic. Once P2P was pioneered via Napster, the floodgates opened and the world of music sharing was here to stay. As an artist and a listener, my personal opinion is that we’ve regressed from that time. The problem with the P2P era, admittedly, was that artists were not getting remunerated for their recordings as disruptive tech eagerly pulled down the bloated major-label system. But, well, we’re still not getting paid that much anyway.
