The idea behind this concept is to provide an end-to-end management of the production chain that will allow artists to focus on creating their music and that will also facilitate their label’s work by sparing them a lot of hassle, stress and risky investment. Vinyl manufacturing is, indeed, expensive and requires great expertise. (I wouldn’t advise anyone to try and produce vinyl records without knowing a thing about it!)
Ethan Hein is a Doctoral Fellow in Music Education at New York University. He teaches music technology, production and education at NYU and Montclair State University. With the NYU Music Experience Design Lab, Ethan has taken a leadership role in the creation of new technologies for learning and expression, most notably the Groove Pizza. He is the instructor of the free Soundfly course series called Theory for Producers. He maintains a widely-followed and influential blog, and has written for various publications, including Slate, Quartz, and NewMusicBox.
It’s home to the University of Colorado Boulder, and has a thriving venue scene that includes The Fox Theatre, which Rolling Stone named the fourth best place in the country to see live music. Located in The Hill, a popular destination for college students, it hosts a variety of genres of live music five to six times per week. It’s also home to tons of outdoor summer concerts throughout the week. And speaking of outdoor spots, mountain-view-graced brewery and food truck hub, Rayback Collective, also has a live music stage with bands performing during events and parties. So grab your lemonade (or beer) and guitar, because Boulder is going to be one of your top destinations.

The best and cheapest ones I’ve found are the Digitech RV-7 and the Electro Harmonix Cathedral. Both have reverse settings but the RV-7 is much smaller, in case you need to save space on your pedalboard! If you’re playing your favorite chords through this effect they will sound like psychedelic, dreamy synthesized strings, especially when you’re playing a guitar that has a whammy. First try it with your clean sound. Yum! And if you put it through a distortion pedal… BAM! Shoegaze!
A common misconception is that 808s have to be low and boomy, even when you’re writing. You can often make things easier on yourself by writing them in an easier-to-hear octave, then shifting them down once you’re happy with your note choices.

Set up as a museum and artist-in-residence program inside a former three-story thrift store, Elsewhere is an incredible opportunity to collaborate with other residents and make use of a ton of random objects and locations. Artists spend one month working and residing on-site, creating projects that activate the living museum. Artists are asked to produce work that is highly specific to the building itself and make use of the unique environment, history, and surrounding neighborhoods. Perhaps the coolest part is that all objects and art remain a part of the museum long after your residency is over, making way for future artists to continue to transform it, and giving you the opportunity to be a part of a permanent collection.
Most importantly: Have fun with it. The chances are you won’t have any huge sponsors in the early stages of a podcast, so use those opening episodes to fine-tune your process and overall sound. Having professional, clean sounding audio will make the difference between listeners taking you seriously and not.
The first is free-hand, which is to say that you record piano and vocals at the same time and even if they’re off tempo the two are synced together. It will sound more free and raw, but you’ll have a hard time syncing rhythmic elements and timed processing such as delay and reverb in a consistent manner. The second way is to record on grid, whereby you’ll record to a click-track to steady your tempo. In this case, it’s best to record one track at a time, but that doesn’t mean you can’t sing to yourself while you record your keyboard takes.
